Introduction to Postpartum Planning
for Parents Workshop

Whether this is your first baby or you are expanding your family, parents can benefit from Postpartum Planning BEFORE they give birth. Families often report more positive and easy transitions to parenthood when there is open discussion and communication about the important topics PRIOR to birth. Creating a Postpartum Plan together, while taking into account both of your individual preferences for after birth, can help achieve a more positive postpartum experience, increase communication skills, and reduce conflict.

One of the most important aspects of Your Postpartum is the experience of learning how to create one and creating it with your partner. This opens up the opportunity to learn and encouraged open communication of your desires with your partner. You will have a chance to discuss some of the 'what if's', important considerations, and topics that new parents will encounter in the first year.

Postpartum Plans will encourage you and your partner to discuss plans and hopes for what you would like after your baby is born, and within the first year after birth. This workshop is intended to be taken prior to your baby’s birth.

Some topics of discussion will include:

  • Logistical information for recovery

    • What might you need after baby is born to aid your recovery?

      • How does that differ depending on your birth experience?

  • Logistical information for life with baby

    • what needs to be done ahead of time?

    • what do you and baby need?

    • what are your plans for maternity leave / parental leave / use of vacation time, etc.? (including plans for back to work and daycare)

  • Baby care Preferences

    • Examples include feeding, sleeping routine and location, health care, attachment and bonding, parenting styles, etc.

  • Expectations for both parents

    • including information on setting expectations as a couple and for each other, open communication, and parenting as a team!

  • Preferences and expectations for close family and friends

  • Self care

    • for both parents, as well as mental health considerations

    • relationship building beyond birth

  • plus more!

This just touches the surfaces of some of the topics that you may need to talk about. Many of these topics can be challenging and ones you may or may not consider. With so many options and topics to consider in the postpartum period, it can be overwhelming and confusing! This will give you the opportunity to have support through the process and find out, 'What does all of this really mean?" and “What do we need to plan for from here?”.
